How your Dasha is calculated
- 1
Your birth time and place fix the Moon's exact degree and its birth Nakshatra.
- 2
The Nakshatra lord starts your Mahadasha; the Moon's position sets how much of it was left at birth.
- 3
The 120-year Vimshottari cycle then runs Ketu → Venus → Sun → Moon → Mars → Rahu → Jupiter → Saturn → Mercury.
Mahadasha periods in Vimshottari Dasha
Vimshottari is the most widely used Dasha system in Vedic astrology. The nine Mahadashas always follow the same order and length; what differs from person to person is where in the cycle you were born.
- Ketu 7 years · Venus 20 years · Sun 6 years
- Moon 10 years · Mars 7 years · Rahu 18 years
- Jupiter 16 years · Saturn 19 years · Mercury 17 years
Mahadasha, Antardasha, Pratyantardasha — the five levels
Each Mahadasha is divided into nine Antardashas (also called Bhukti) in the same planetary order, starting with the Mahadasha lord itself. Each Antardasha divides again into Pratyantardasha, then Sookshma, then Prana Dasha.
Astrologers use the Mahadasha for the broad theme of a life chapter, the Antardasha for the next few months to years, and the smaller levels only when the birth time is very reliable.
Why do different websites show different Dasha dates?
Dasha dates are sensitive to the Moon's exact degree. Different birth times, time zones, ayanamsa settings or year lengths (360 vs 365.25 days) shift the dates. MoKundli uses Lahiri ayanamsa and shows the inputs used, so you can check the calculation before you interpret it.
